" Mons Meg, with her 20 inch (50 cm) with wide barrel, was built to smash castle walls. The French Duke of Burgundy paid the gunsmith Jehan Cambier to make the gun in 1449. The barrel was formed from iron rods bount together with 37 white - hot iron hoops that were hammered into position "
In 1457 Mons Meg arrived in Scotland as a 🎁 to ( wedding ) James ll.
Lovely views and would recommend a visit. Only problem I had was when I wanted to purchase something, there was no one around to take payment so ended up leaving my items.
Absolutely amazing alot of walking up the hill towards the castle but we'll worth it .Make sure you wear good trainers or shoes and get there for the 1 o'clock canon blast. Awesome
Fantastic trip. Very informative military museum's. Very friendly and helpful staff. My wife and I spent 4 hrs going round.
The sheer size of this cannon is monsterous! A 20 inch diameter barrel firing 386lb cannon balls! I would not have liked to be in the way of one of those hurtling towards you!
Made me more proud to be Scottish, all along this amazing castle was only one hour away by train, unbelievable. We don't know what beautiful sights we have all over Scotland.(..AMAZING,EVEN ONCE IN YOUR LIFE.)

Was a really lovely experience, big castle, even though a few bit were closed due to covid, the exhibitions were still great and we got to see the big gun fire off at 1300 👏🏻👏🏻 would highly recommend :) …
Visit this place at least once in your life. The original structures are SOOO old, and rebuilt over the centuries to become more fortified. Pivotal in English and Scottish history. I like that you can learn about the eras of history you …
Never ceases to thrill. Get there when it opens as, even with timed entries, it packed by noon on a Sunday in August. Definitely make your reservations well in advance.
It was amazing. I'd seen the castle in documentaries but to be there in person was awesome. There were a lot of tourists but we had no problem getting up close to anything we wanted to see. Staff was helpful and friendly.
